Freckleteen jumped from her vanity chair. “Oh my goodness, it’s my birthday.” She pulled off the bathing suit bottoms leaving her hair all wonky.
“Sweet eleventeen. Happy birthday Darling.”
“Thanks. Oh, Mom, I went to see Dr. Issac Eyebrite yesterday because my eyes… they’re fuzzy.”
“Oh my, you are growing up. I’m surprised you didn’t say anything before now—going by yourself, and I know you had to go through the smurgleden of dandy lions. Did they roar?”
“No. The point is, it’s my birthday, and I can’t see too well. I have to do something.”
“Which spectrum is missing from your eyes?”
“Well, Dr. Eyebrite said blue. And, Mom, my eyes are blue—it doesn’t make sense. He told me a ridiculous remedy. I’m supposed to act like I’m blue.” Freckleteen made a crazy face. “Sad, Mom—blue, for like three days. That’s impossible. And now it’s my birthday—I can’t be blue on my birthday. This is the most horrible thought … I think I need glasses.”
Amazing Grace smiled. “Freckleteen, they will look darling.” Freckleteen’s nose scrunched. “I’ll fly over with you this morning to get them, and to the bakery to pick up your cake. Serendipity is making it extra special. It’s a no-bake magic cake.” …
