Foreword

Springs, summers, and falls faded as Rian turned fourteen in August. His experience with the faeries had become entirely private. Many months had passed since returning from Ireland, the boy almost sure he had imagined Sparkling Forest. His visit to the Little Winchell Castle with the Boys Scouts, proved nothing like his own experience in Little Witches Castle but Rian kept his mouth shut. Most likely, he’d tell Paul, but not yet. Along with new technological advancements in Sparkling Forest, some of the unusual haunts, like Serendipity’s Bakery, were changing too. The baker-faerie now sold tea and colorful transparent fortune candies. Spontanei-tea had become her best seller. Freckleteen, now called Auraya, approached thirteen. She encouraged new ideas for city planning in Niggle Nat Winderwood Glen and cottages were expanding into open floor plans. Many new crystal-clear materials camouflaged faerie homes in the woods … windows into other worlds. Auraya thought of Rian often and wondered if he’d connect with her again. Stinkletoes, Sparkling Forest’s great inventor, had come up with two AI-faux-faerie creations, which were magnificent faerie facsimiles. Complete with all the Sparkling features, these two AIs, while created equal in Stinkletoes lab, left quite a different footprint, if you will. Stinkletoes’ first full-grown creation was named Ah-doe. Complete with glistening wings and only slightly mechanical, Ah-doe delivered air-mail—and gave little indication that he wasn’t just the same as any other faerie. The inventor’s other creation, Tipper, Number two, was born as tall as a Sparkling teenager. Stinkletoes gave him wings, but Tipper preferred to tromp around the forest, often tipping over as he collected various curative herbs and berries. The starry-eyed artificial intelligence was far more intelligent than artificial. He loved birdwatching and observed each glittering thing with child-like fascination. Since Rian’s journey into Sparkling Forest, new energetic interactions between human and faerie had begun. Soon, Rian wouldn’t be the only one who could see Sparkling Faeries. The mountain known as Shasta, as well as his family, had been sprinkled with faerie dust and a rare opportunity could soon reveal itself, but not without its complications….
